V4 : Science Programme @ CeNS

The students of the SJRC School, HBR Layout, Bangalore participated in the programme held on 31 October 2015.

The programme included a talk "Microscopy for Nanoworld " by Dr. Neena S. John, CeNS, followed by a tour of the research labs.

V4 : Science Programme @ CeNS

CeNS embarked on a science initiation programme V4 aimed at students studying in the high school/+2 level with a view to stimulating and nurturing scientific curiosity in the young minds.

Progression from CLCR to CeNS: a journey from 1991 to 2015

The Centre for Liquid Crystal Research founded in 1991 is now come to known as Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS) widening the scope of its research to embrace the basic as well as applied aspects of nanoscience/technology and soft matter. Being a premier institute under DST, Govt. of India, the Centre is engaged in materials research encompassing length scales from the nano to meso levels focussing on a variety of metal and semiconductor nanostructures, liquid crystal materials, gels, membranes and hybrid systems.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, visited the Centre.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, visited the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences at Jalahalli, Bangalore on 22 August, 2015. During his visit, he evinced keen interest in the demo kits and the poster displays presented by the research fellows of the Centre. While interacting with the faculty, the Minister emphasised the need for quantitative output that can reach the common man in a form that is easily perceived. Constant dialogues and brainstorming among the researchers will only help in identifying relevant scientific problems and bringing them out for the benefit of the society at large, the Minister pointed out. He counselled young researchers to shift from routine to out-of-the box thinking and to dream big that could be translated to great innovations. He later planted a sapling in the premises of the Centre and was very appreciative of the overall achievements of the Centre. He also mentioned that the Ministry of Science and Technology is prepared to extend extraordinary support in deserving cases.

Prof. G. U. Kulkarni, Director of the Centre in his speech, assured that the Centre would strive to achieve the goals and live up to the aspirations of the Government of India in working towards the betterment of the Nation. Mr. Subhod Gulvady, Administrative Officer, proposed a vote of thanks.
