The Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS) is setting up a new campus on about 14 acres of land, allotted by the Government of Karnataka, for the exclusive purpose of promoting Nano-Science and Technology and to create a Centre of Excellence.
The foundation stone for the new campus was laid by Bharat Ratna Professor C.N. R. Rao, FRS, Chairman, Governing Council, CeNS. In his address, Prof. Rao emphasised the importance of Nanoscience and Technology and its applicability in a wide range of areas, from drug delivery, engineering, agriculture and so on. He advised the Centre to take-up important projects and completes them on fast track mode so that innovations would help in the development in all spheres of life.
Professor G.U. Kulkarni, Director, CeNS, in his welcome speech, mentioned that the aim of the Centre will be to highlight the applications of Nanoscience and Technology in all walks of life and to translate the results of research into technology and to ensure that the innovations are applicable in the lives of common man particularly in Indian context. The facilities in the new campus will be designed to include regular interaction programmes with the students from schools and colleges, exhibitions and demonstrations of research work for developing a scientific temper among young students.
The campus will also house specialised laboratories and incubation centres for carrying out research and technology projects in collaboration with other scientific institutions as well as industries.

V4: Science Programme@CeNS celebrated the National Science Day by organizing a day-long programme on 27 February 2016. Students from Venus International and Venkat International schools, Rajajinagar, were invited. The highlight of the programme was a lecture on "Chemistry is Fun" by the eminent Scientist, Prof. Uday Maitra, IISc, Bangalore. Prof.Maitra along with his PhD student Mr. Raju Laishram enthralled the young students with live demonstrations pertaining to various chemical phenomena such as Thermochromism, Chemiluminescence, Solvatochromism etc. After the talk the visiting students were taken around the campus for a tour of the laboratories.
The students of The New Cambridge High School, Bengaluru participated in the programme held on 19 December 2015.
The programme included a talk "Magnetic storage" by Dr. S. Angappane, CeNS, followed by a tour of the research labs.
CeNS participated in the Mega Science Expo which was part of India International Science Festival (IISF 2015) held in IIT Delhi during 4-8 December 2015. We have put posters of research activities, displayed demo kits and flyers of ‘Invisible Switches’, ‘Polysoft Switchable Glass’, ‘Fast Responding Energy Efficient Anisotropic Organogels’ and ‘Temperature Sensing Liquid Crystal’. The Honorable minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan visited our stall and looked into the inventions. Our stall was visited by the faculty and researchers of various institutions in addition to school teachers and students.
The students of the NMKRV College, Bengaluru participated in the programme held on 5 December 2015.
The programme included a talk "Visible and Invisible Light" by Dr. D.S. Shankar Rao, CeNS, followed by a tour of the research labs.
V4: Science Programme@CeNS paid tributes to the Nobel Laurete Scientist , Prof. C. V. Raman on his Birthday by organizing a day-long programme on 7 November 2015. Students from kendriya Vidyalaya, Jalahalli, were invited. The highlight of the programme was a lecture on "Light, Colour and Raman" by an eminent Scientist, Prof. Chandrabhas Narayana, JNCASR, Bangalore. After the talk the visiting students were taken around the campus for a tour of the laboratories.
The students of the SJRC School, HBR Layout, Bangalore participated in the programme held on 31 October 2015.
The programme included a talk "Microscopy for Nanoworld " by Dr. Neena S. John, CeNS, followed by a tour of the research labs.
