SUMMARY:Twistronics: A Recent Avenue in van der Waals Heterostructures
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Seminar \n\non\n Twistronics: A Recent Avenue in van der Waals Heteros
tructures\nby\nDr. Pramoda Kumar Nayak,IIT-Madras\n \non\nMonday, 21 Jun 20
21\nTime:3:00pm\n\n\n \nAbstract:\n\nAfter the discovery of graphene i
n 2004, many other 2D crystals have been identified, often with intriguing
properties that have no counterparts in three-dimensional solids. Even if i
ndividual 2D materials own various interesting and unexpected properties, t
he stacking of such layers leads to ‘artificial vdW solids’ called as van d
er Waals heterostructures (vdW HSs) that result in the emergence of new sta
tes of matter with novel functionalities. The vdW HSs not only depend on th
e combination of different 2D crystal but also on their rotational alignmen
t opening the avenue for a new field called twistronics. Coupling between t
he two layers depends on the stacking angle, which can be used as an extern
al degree of freedom to tune their optical and electronic properties. In th
is talk, I will cover the atlas of vdW materials and their heterostructures
emphasizing on synthesis, characterization and potential applications in e
lectronics and optoelectronics. Additionally, I will describe how a simple
twist can dramatically changes the functionalities of vdW HSs, fabricated f
rom 2D monolayers grown by chemical vapor deposition. Finally, I will summa
rize the current challenges and future opportunities in this emerging field
